CCA Closing Day 2018

About 50 people enjoyed the hospitality of Cashmere Club on Sunday 15th April. Unfortunately it was windy in Christchurch that day but as Cashmere is so sheltered play continued right up to the home-made afternoon tea which was very welcome.

Owen and Philippa presented the trophies and certificates and Howard Pettigrew photographed the recipients.

Owen thanked Cashmere and Presidents of Clubs and his Exec, and Joan Bradford was thanked for her work over many years for keeping track of trophies and preparing certificates.

CCA GC Silver Badge results

The CCA GC Silver Badge tournament for all divisions was played at Holmes Park Croquet Club on Sunday 25 March 2018.

Clubs sent one representative in each grade after a playoff in their club.

After a cold and wet couple of days the sun shone on the players, the lawns were a credit to Holmes Park and we had a great number watching the 18 competitors. Again, it was a pleasure being hosted by Holmes Park.

The Premier (-6 to +2) was won by Jenny Clarke (United) with Jonathan Hart (St James) a close runner up.

Pamela Hurst( United) won the Senior Grade (+3 to +5) with Marguaritte Rogers St James) second on a count back.

Tim Slack (Holmes Park) won the Intermediate Grade (6 to 8) from Lyn Madgwick Cashmere).

Denise Mc Loughlin (United) won the Primary (9 to 16) with Tony Waters (Cashmere) runner-up.

There was some spectacular play in all grades and everyone enjoyed the day.

Don Reyland Stars Tournament national final

Thirteen entrants played in the national final of the Don Reyland Stars Tournament held at the Fendalton Park Croquet Club on the weekend of the 10th and 11th March 2018. The tournament was run as a full round robin with seven rounds on Saturday and six on Sunday. The weather was pleasant with little cloud or wind and reasonable temperatures after the cool nights meaning the lawns had a heavy dew initially. The tournament was managed by Tony O’Donnell and Chris Clarke was referee.

Handicaps varied between -4 (Brian Bullen of Wellington) and 10 (Laura Sutherland of Bay of Plenty) with the latter being undefeated in seven games on the Saturday and the former undefeated in five games on the Sunday. All players won between a quarter and three quarters of their twelve games with Laura Sutherland and Geoff Vautier both winning nine games. Laura took the Gold Star with a net hoop difference of 32 and Geoff the Silver with 22 net hoops.

Full results are at Croquet Scores.

The Don Reyland Stars Tournament is a handicap golf croquet event played at club level, with club representatives playing at an association event with the winner playing in the national final.

Edward Wilson wins the NZ Open

The 2018 NZ AC Open was played at United and Fendalton Park croquet clubs. The doubles were covered in a previous post.  There were 38 entries in the singles that started with four blocks that were played from Tuesday 23  to Thursday 25 January. The top four from each block played in the knockout with the rest qualifying for the Heenan Plate. Every round of the knockout was played as best-of-three matches. Of the 35 games played in the knockout there were only three triple-peels which reflects the challenging lawns and hoops prepared by  the manager, Chris Clarke. Lena Metcalf was at United every day looking after catering.

Edward Wilson from Australia won the 2018 New Zealand AC Open today at United Croquet Club beating Stephen Mulliner of England in a 2-0 final. Edward and Stephen were runners-up in  the doubles. See the previous post for more on the doubles.

The other semi-finalists were Greg Bryant (West Cost) and Jenny Clarke (United).

The Heenan Plate (for players who did not make the knockout) was won by John Christie (Thames Valley) with Josh Freeth (Auckland and ex United) runner-up.

Alain Giraud (England) won the Bronze Medal with Brian Cumming (Canada) runner-up.  The Bronze Medal is a new event for players eliminated from the knockout.

The Charles Jones Slaver, for the best player with scratch or greater handicap, was won by Lindsay David (Australia).
